OpenAI’s New Features and Capabilities

Amid reaching 300 million weekly users, OpenAI caught everyone’s attention with an exciting wave of updates, including features now accessible to free users.

1) Canvas: A Collaborative Editor inside ChatGPT

Canvas is OpenAI’s latest addition—a collaborative editor built directly into ChatGPT. It’s a poweful tool for text and code editing.

Key Features:

  • Inline Highlighting: Highlight specific text or code and tell ChatGPT what to tweak.

  • Direct Editing: Make changes directly within the editor

  • Shortcuts: Need a quick edit? Use commands like “suggest edits,” “adjust length,” or “change reading level” for text, and “review code” or “fix bugs” for code.

Canvas is open to all users, including free accounts. It works with GPT-4o so if you exceed the GPT-4o limit, you’ll need to wait for a reset.

2) ChatGPT Search: Now for Everyone

Previously reserved for premium users, ChatGPT’s search functionality is now available to all logged-in users globally—even on free accounts.

Key Features:

  • Answers with Sources: Get fact-checked responses with clickable citations.

  • Visual Data Integration: See real-time visuals for queries about weather, stocks, or sports.

  • Browser Integration: Use the Chrome extension to make ChatGPT your default search engine

  • Voice Search: Ask your queries out loud instead of typing.

3) Advanced Voice Mode: Real-Time Interaction

OpenAI has upped its game with Advanced Voice Mode, now supporting:

  • Video chat

  • Screen sharing

  • Image uploads

These capabilities are rolling out on mobile apps (iOS and Android) in most regions, though users in the EU and some other countries will need to wait.

Standard Voice, which transcribes speech into text for responses, remains available to all signed-in users.

4) ChatGPT Projects for Organizing Your Work

ChatGPT’s new Projects feature helps you organize your AI-assisted work in a dedicated workspace. It lets you:

  • Group conversations together into folders.

  • Add files and custom instructions

Projects are available for premium users with free users getting access later “as soon as possible.”

Google

1) Google’s Quest for Universal AI with Gemini 2.0

Google introduced Gemini 2.0, its response to the rising trend of creating "agentic" AI. The company envisions Gemini 2.0 as a more useful, tool-integrating, multimodal assistant that takes meaningful actions on users’ behalf.

Google also revealed several projects under development, all based on Gemini 2.0:

  • Project Astra: Expect an AI assistant on mobile devices that naturally converses, remembers past interactions, and integrates seamlessly with Google tools like Search, Lens, and Maps.

  • Project Mariner: Look forward to an AI agent capable of understanding everything on a webpage—text, buttons, and more—handling complex online tasks.

  • Agents for Developers (Jules): Developers can anticipate an AI helper that plans and writes code solutions directly within their environment.

  • Agents in Games: Gamers can expect AI companions that watch the on-screen action, understand what’s happening in the game, and provide real-time strategic advice (Wow!)

2) Veo 2 for Stunning Video Generation

Google didn’t stop with Gemini 2.0. Just one week after launching Veo, its first AI video creation model, the company unveiled Veo 2. The new model leads the AI media world, clearly outperforming OpenAI’s Sora and other competitors.
